It was one of those nights Wednesday at Honokaa Armory, and it could be the same way Monday.
Koa Callihan scored 17 points and the Dragons won a foul-fest against Kohala 97-79, using their potent offense to overcome their shortcomings on the other end of the floor.
“(Our defense), it’s horrible right now,” coach Jayme Carvalho said. “It’s hard to really judge against Kohala, they play up to us.
“I’m hoping it kicks in sooner rather than later.”
So far, Honokaa (5-2) has been able to rely on its offense. Carvalho figures his team and Waiakea have the best starting five in BIIF boys basketbalk offensively.
The Dragons put five player in double figures against the Cowboys (3-5). Jonathan Charbonneau (14 points), Kamuela Spencer-Herring (12), Kelvin Falk (12) and Kea Callihan helped Honokaa move just percentage points behind Hawaii Prep for the top spot in Division II.
Honokaa hosts Ka Makani (4-1) on Monday with first place on the line. HPA has a game at Konawaena on Saturday.
“It’s a big game,” Carvalho. “We’re excited and the kids are excited and I think we’re preparing the right way.”
On Thursday at practice, that included plenty of free throws after the Dragons converted on only 25 of 52 from the line against Kohala.
“I wish we had more baskets at the Armory to use,” Carvalho said.
Isaiah Salvador scored 17 points for the Cowboys (3-5), who fell into fifth place in Division II. Maui Hook finished with 13 and Kainalu Emeliano-Solomon added 11.
In JV, Honokaa won 75-46.
