Stress reduction series offered

The College of Continuing Education and Community Service at the University of Hawaii at Hilo has scheduled the Mindfulness Based Stress Reduction series from 1-5:30 p.m. Jan. 30, Feb. 13 and 20 and March 12, with a retreat day March 5 from 10 a.m.-5 p.m.

Classes will be held on the UH-Hilo campus. The cost is $150 with an additional book requirement.

Classes are taught by Bernie Schreck, MA. The in-depth program will help participants manage the symptoms of stress, chronic illness or pain, and improve their quality of life through diverse techniques such as guided meditation, gentle, mindful yoga, and breathing exercises.

Learn basics of permaculture

The College of Continuing Education and Community Service at the University of Hawaii at Hilo hosts an “Introduction to Permaculture Design” workshop from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Jan. 30 and 31 in UH-Hilo’s Kanaka‘ole Hall, Room 111. The cost is $95.

Instructor Zach Mermel will teach the basics of permaculture, a design discipline that mimics nature’s patterns to create healthy, resilient human habitats.

Experiential learning exercises, including plant propagation, garden bed creation, and nature-based awareness, will be complemented by slide presentations and collaborative discussions. The course will culminate in a mini-design project.
