Hilo student wins district bee
Gaayatri Godbole, a seventh-grader at Hilo Intermediate School, won the 2016 Hawaii District Spelling Bee Jan. 23 at the Hawaii Academy of Arts in Pahoa.
Her winning word was “malapropism.” Godbole will represent Hawaii Island at the Hawaii State Spelling Bee on April 1 on Oahu.
Also going to Oahu will be runner-up Tanner Nakamoto, an eighth-grader at Konawaena Middle School.
More than 20 students competed in the district spelling bee, with 11 elementary and middle schools represented.
Godbole is the daughter of Rahul and Dakshina Godbole of Hilo. Her English teacher is Jaysen Agena.
Adult correction officers wanted
The state Department of Public Safety is looking to fill adult correction officer vacancies on every island. The recruitment is open on the Department of Human Resources and Development job-seekers webpage and will end Jan. 29 at midnight.
To qualify, applicants must meet all of the requirements listed on DHRD’s webpage. Applicants must be a high school graduate or have a GED. They also must have one year of responsible work experience which shows the applicant possesses the ability to relate effectively with people.

Book, bake sale donations sought
North Kohala Public Library is accepting book and media donations for the annual Friends of North Kohala Library Book and Bake Sale scheduled for 8:30 a.m.-2 p.m. March 19 in the Kohala High School cafeteria.
Books, videos, CDs and DVDs in good condition can be dropped off at the library during any open hours. Encyclopedias will not be accepted and any textbooks must have been published within the past 10 years. The library hours are noon-8 p.m. Monday; 9 a.m.-5 p.m. Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday; and 9 a.m.-4 p.m. on Friday.
