During the week of Jan. 18-24, Hawaii Island police arrested 17 motorists for driving under the influence of an intoxicant. Six of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes. One was younger than 21.
During the week of Jan. 18-24, Hawaii Island police arrested 17 motorists for driving under the influence of an intoxicant. Six of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes. One was younger than 21.
The numbers of arrests by district were: Kona, seven; Puna, six; South Hilo, three; and South Kohala, one.
So far this year, there have been 71 DUI arrests compared to 67 during the same period last year, an increase of 6 percent.
There have been 85 major accidents so far this year compared to 72 during the same period last year, an increase of 18.1 percent.
So far this year, there have been no official fatalities compared with one during the same period last year. A moped rider was killed in a hit-and-run collision Jan. 19 in Ocean View, but it is not a part of the official traffic fatality count because the crash occurred on a private road.
DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide.
