HONOLULU (AP) — The Hawaii Department of Education is working to solve a nearly $100,000 mistake it made when it overpaid more than 200 substitute teachers in 2014.
The department said most of the overpayments were the result of teachers being paid twice, once in August 2014 and again the following month. Officials say they were alerted to the error after three substitute teachers questioned their paychecks. They say it took them about a year to determine what caused the mishap. The department plans to recover its losses by garnishing future paychecks.
