A stirring second-half comeback went for naught in overtime Saturday night for UH-Hilo at the start of a four-game road trip.
Brian Ying scored 23 point and grabbed 12 rebounds and Notre Dame de Namur beat the Vulcans 82-80 in Belmont, Calif.
The Argonauts’ lead hovered around 10 points for much of the game until Van Lockett hit a jumper at the 8:56 mark.
After Jalen Young’s free throw made the score 58-49, the Vulcans (4-12, 4-8 PacWest) went on a run as Salim Gloyd and Lockett scored the next eight points to narrow the lead to one. The Argonauts (3-16, 2-10) built the gap to four but Gloyd answered with a dunk and jumper to tie the game at 67 with 17 seconds on the clock. Both teams called time outs to set their final plays. Tre’Shawn King-Dunbar hit the tiebreaker to put the Argonauts ahead with a few ticks on the clock to go. Gloyd responded, hitting a shot to send the game into overtime.
The extra session also went down to the wire. Jordan Russell tied the game at 80 with seven seconds to go. After Young sank a pair of free throws, Russell’s 3-point shot didn’t find its mark.
Gloyd led the Vulcans with 22 points on 9-of-16 shooting from the field with a 3-pointer and three free throws. Parker Farris added 17 points with four 3-pointers. Lockett added 14 points and seven assists.
Women win
Kim Schmelz scored 12 points with eight rebounds as the Lady Vulcans beat OVERSET FOLLOWS:the Argonauts 55-46.
“We played pretty solid on both ends in the first half,” Vulcans coach David Kaneshiro said. “We had a pretty solid to start in the second half as well and were able to hold them off in the end.”
Lauren Hong added 10 points and four assists for UH-Hilo (5-11, 5-6).
The Argonauts (3-17, 2-10) were only 4 of 31 from the field in the first half and trailed 26-12.
The UH-Hilo men and women head to Dominican on Monday.
