Since 2004, Recycle Hawaii’s Composting is Recycling, Too! program has brought experts in the recovery of discarded organic materials into communities islandwide through more than 260 home composting and vermiculture workshops plus numerous community event displays.

An estimated 5,000 participants have learned how to turn food scraps, food contaminated paper and yard trimmings into valuable soil amendments — thus reducing green waste deposits into our island’s landfills.

Master composter-educator Ann Hassler, who has conducted most of this outreach and education since 2006, moves to Washington state in March 2016. Recycle Hawaii acknowledges her many years of dedicated service to our Hawaii Island community.

Before leaving, Hassler will teach two workshops on Saturdays — Feb. 13 at Earth Matters Farm near Ocean View and March 5 at Keaau Reuse Center. There is no charge for these workshops, however donations and memberships to Recycle Hawaii are appreciated.

Advance registration is required on first-come, first-serve basis by contacting Marsha Hee at hiartrecycle@gmail.com or 985-8725. Worms and worm bins will be available for purchase from the instructor at the workshop.

These programs are sponsored by Recycle Hawaii with funding support from the Swain Barber Foundation and in partnership with Earth Matters Farm. For composting and recycling information visit www.recyclehawaii.org.
