2 helicopters to land at HPA
Twelve Hawaii Preparatory Academy Middle School students will participate in a unique learning experience Feb. 10 that involves two helicopters flying to the school’s Upper Campus.
Between 9 and 11:50 a.m., the students will have an opportunity to fly in a helicopter as one of their culminating activities for the school’s Theme Week program, “Come Fly with Me.” The helicopters will take off from HPA’s Upper School baseball field and return about every 15 minutes.
Mauna Loa Helicopters and HPA are taking every safety precaution for the students and community, and Mauna Loa Helicopters is making every effort to minimize rotor noise.

2 from Big Isle excel at Gonzaga
Ciera Min of Hilo earned placement on Gonzaga (Wash.) University’s president’s list and Edgar Bartolome of Pepeekeo made the dean’s list for fall semester 2015.
Students must earn a 3.7-4.0 GPA to be placed on the president’s list; students must earn a 3.5-3.69 GPA for the dean’s list.
Kingsley earns degree at MU
Rachel Kingsley of Volcano was among 932 students from Miami (Ohio) University who received degrees during fall commencement exercises Dec. 11 in Millett Hall.
Kingsley received a master of arts degree.
UHH sophomore studying abroad
University of Hawaii at Hilo sophomore Angela Laureta received the prestigious Benjamin A. Gilman International Study Abroad Scholarship in the amount of $5,000.
Laureta, a kinesiology and exercise science major, is studying at the University of Stirling, Scotland, and will continue her journey at Hanyang University, South Korea, in fall 2016.
The Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship Program offers grants to undergraduate students of U.S. citizenship with limited financial means to pursue academic studies or credit-bearing, career-oriented internships abroad.

Hilo man earns PLU scholarship
Incoming Pacific Lutheran (Wash.) University student Blair Martin of Hilo was awarded a prestigious President’s Scholarship worth $25,000 a year.
PLU is a private liberal arts university in Tacoma.
The Presidential Scholarships are renewable for three additional years of undergraduate study.
