William P. “Willy” “Grandpa” Benevides Sr., 91, of Hilo died Jan. 16 at Life Care Center of Hilo. Born in Hilo, he was a retired Hawaii Tribune-Herald press operator, worked for Mana Transportation and Amfac, and was a U.S. Army World WW II veteran and member of Waiakea Kumiai, St. Joseph Catholic Church and Big Island Portuguese Cultural Club. Visitation 6-9 p.m. Thursday (Feb. 11) at Dodo Mortuary Chapel. Wake service at 7 p.m. Visitation again 8:30-10:30 a.m. Friday (Feb. 12) at St. Joseph Catholic Church. Mass at 10:30 a.m. Casual attire; flowers welcomed. Burial at 11:30 a.m. at Hawaii Veterans Cemetery No. 2. Survived by daughter, Marilyn Kamakawiwo‘ole of Waimea; sons, Billy (Lei Wise) Benevides of Hilo and David (Kim Kainoa) Benevides of Waimea; brother, Anthony Benevides of Hilo; sister, Fanny (Richard) Gouveia of Kona; 14 grandchildren, 28 great-grandchildren and one great-great granddaughter; nieces and nephews. Joyce Shigeko Hara, 81, of Hilo died Jan. 23 at Hospice of Hilo Pohai Malama facility. Born in Santa Ana, Calif., she was a retired salesperson and member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Kilauea Ward. Visitation 3-4 p.m. Saturday (Feb. 13) at Dodo Mortuary Chapel. Richard Alan Henderson, 69, of Keaau and Volcano died Jan. 29 at Hilo Medical Center. Born in Detroit, he was a retired finish carpenter, boat builder, maintenance chief for Volcano Golf &Country Club, golfer and U.S. Navy veteran. Private services. Dennis Michael Hesia Sr., 70, of Keaau died Dec. 27 at Hilo Medical Center. Born in Honolulu, he was a retired foreman for Highway Construction Co., professional boxer and trainer, race car driver and fisherman.
