WAIKOLOA — The University of Southern California will head back to the mainland with some extra, shiny baggage.
USC turned in a 6-under-282 third round, rallying to win the 25th edition of the Amer Ari with a 29-under 835 total. UCLA held a two-stroke lead to start the day but didn’t match their second round success with five players at par or better to post a 16-under 272.
The Bruins came in with a 2-under 286 to finish at 27-under 837. Arizona State and Oregon were tied for third place with 22-under 842.
Oklahoma State broke up the Pac 12 party with a 19-under 845 to finish in fifth place. In sixth place was Stanford (846) followed by Oregon State (848), TCU (851), Texas Tech (860) and Auburn (861).
Oregon’s Aaron Wise turned in a tournament-best 8-under 64 to take the individual title with a 16-under 200. He was two strokes better than USC’s Rico Hoey (68-68-66-202, -14). In third place was Stanford’s Maverick McNealy (68-68-67-203, -13) followed by Oklahoma State’s Zachary Olsen (69-67-69-205, -11).
The University of Hawaii at Manoa (867) finished tied for 13th. Host UH-Hilo in finished in 16th, getting a big contribution from Ric Yamamoto.
The senior Vulcan shot 5-under 67 catapulting into a tie for 20th place. Yamamoto finished the tourney at 4-under 212 (71-74-67).
“For us, that’s our low for the team in quite a while,” UH-Hilo assistant coach Ron Takahashi said. “Not making fun of him at all, but Rick doesn’t hit the ball very far. Not nearly as far as the Division I players. But he played the best round I had ever seen from him. He played very smart, made shots when he had to, and executed the tough shots. He played such a smart round of golf.”
Kyeton Littel was tied for 62nd place at 3-over 219 (71-75-73) while Jared Kinoshita (74-77-77) and David Tottori (78-73-77) were tied for 102nd place at 12-over 228. Casey Tamura completed the scoring team with an 18-over 234 (74-82-78) and tied for 110th place.
