Health academy students compete
Waiakea High School Health Academy seniors took first place in five categories last month during the inaugural Big Island Health Occupations Students of America competition at the University of Hawaii at Hilo.
HOSA prepares students to become future leaders in health care fields.
Amy Odiara won first place in Medical Assisting, Bryce Yamashita won first place in Physical Therapy, Samantha Zee won first place in Nutrition, Richa Pacheco won first place in Nursing Assisting, and Eva Abraham and Alexis Amon-Wilkins won first place as a team in CPR/First Aid. Maria Bartolome won third place in Medical Terminology.
Also competing were teams from Kamehameha, Keaau and Ka‘u high schools. Top finishers advanced to the HOSA state competition on Oahu.
UH-Hilo hosting open house
The University of Hawaii at Hilo Admissions Office invites the public to its open house from 9 a.m.-2 p.m. Saturday. Check-in begins at 8:30 a.m. at the Campus Center Plaza.
The Admissions Office will offer campus tours, the chance to meet faculty and students and provide information about the university’s academic programs, residence halls and student support services.

Missouri college students honored
Jordan Caoagdan of Hilo and Keana Kaohimaunu of Honokaa were named to the dean’s list for the fall 2015 semester at Culver-Stockton (Mo.) College.
Culver-Stockton College is a four-year residential institution in affiliation with the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) and specializes in experiential education.
2 from Hilo on UJ dean’s list
University of Jamestown (N.D.) students Katrina Ombac and Skye Ombac of Hilo were named to the dean’s list for the fall 2015 semester.
To be eligible for this award, full-time students must earn at least 12 credit hours and have a 3.50 GPA or higher.
Pain therapy workshop Feb. 20
The College of Continuing Education and Community Service at the University of Hawaii at Hilo offers Self-Managing Pain with Trigger Point Therapy from 9 a.m.-noon Feb. 20 in UH-Hilo’s Kanaka‘ole Hall, Room 126.
The cost is $75 for one person or $125 for two people sharing supplies. Workbook and massage ball are included in the cost, but registration is required to ensure materials will be available at the session.
