Hospice of Hilo was one of 10 nonprofit organizations statewide to receive a check for $25,000 from Servco Pacific Inc., celebrating the sale of its 500,000th Toyota, Lexus and Scion vehicle since becoming a distributor in 1958.
Hawaii residents nominated the nonprofits by writing why they are personally thankful for the work the nonprofit does. From Nov. 16 through Dec. 18, Servco received more than 3,700 nominations on behalf of more than 500 local nonprofits. Winners were selected by a committee of Servco employees.
“Hospice of Hilo is incredibly grateful to Servco for their generous support,” said Hospice of Hilo CEO Brenda S. Ho. “Each of our team members is so dedicated to the work they do and the care they provide, so receiving this award is huge validation for the heart they put into serving patients and their families in East Hawaii.”
What makes the gift even more meaningful, Ho said, is that it is a result of a past client nomination.
“Having someone who has received our care speak so highly of our work, that’s something really special,” Ho said. “Our team thanks Mrs. Julia Hoke for sharing her story and securing this award for us.”
Ho said the monies received will go toward the purchase of critically needed equipment and staff education to help hospice nurses, social workers and spiritual counselors be better-prepared to meet the challenges of working within hospice care and the East Hawaii region.
“My husband was a patient of Hospice of Hilo. It’s been eight months since our loss and we are still receiving services today,” Hoke wrote in her nomination submission to Servco. “My family feels blessed that hospice has helped my husband, myself and my nine children to understand that there is a process to death. Even after death, we as survivors go through a process. We would not be as strong as a family unit today if Hospice was not there to love and support us.”
Hospice of Hilo provides specialized comfort care for patients facing a life-limiting or serious illness. Services are delivered to patients in their place of residence, or at the Pohai Malama a Harry &Jeanette Weinberg Care Center. In addition to hospice services, Hospice of Hilo also provides bereavement counseling to any and all residents who have lost a loved one (regardless of whether the loved one received hospice care).
