Hospice of Hilo is inviting the public to a free in-service presentation titled “Getting Comfortable with the Uncomfortable” from 4-5:30 p.m. Feb. 29 at the organization’s Community Building, 1011 Waianuenue Ave., Hilo.
The session will be presented by Hospice of Hilo’s spiritual counselors Phillip Jones and Rebekah Bernard and will explore the spiritual and existential concerns of dying.
Jones is an author, psychotherapist and rites of passage facilitator. After working as a systems engineer, he lived for 17 years as a Hindu monk, meeting and studying with teachers and organizing interfaith conferences. Jones began an intensive study of Carl Jung’s teachings in 1993, and has worked to integrate these teachings with the principles of indigenous medicine wheels.
Bernard holds a master’s degree in counseling psychology from the University of Hawaii at Hilo. She has been a student of interdisciplinary spirituality for more than a decade and has extensive education and experience with meditation and other forms of self-care.
“This is really a great opportunity for the community to get together to learn more about these concerns of saying goodbye to those who touch our lives,” Bernard said. “There will be discussions and group activities as we listen to the heart and develop meaningful rituals for our wellness.”
Hospice of Hilo provides specialized comfort care for patients facing a life-limiting or serious illness. Services are delivered to patients in their place of residence or at the Pohai Malama a Harry &Jeanette Weinberg Care Center.
