James “Jimmy” Correa, 96, of Hilo died Feb. 7 at home. Born in Hilo, he was a retired recreation leader for the county Department of Parks and Recreation, former county sanitation pump operator, U.S. Army World War II veteran who served in Guadacanal and the Solomon Islands, member of St. Joseph Catholic Church, Hilo Catholic Youth Organization, Big Island and Orchid Island Umpires associations, Papaikou Senior Citizens and American Legion Posts 3 and 16, and longtime youth and high school baseball coach and baseball and softball umpire who won numerous championships and awards. Coach Correa spent his life with the youth in East Hawaii, with the goal to instill good sportsmanship, citizenship, and fair play through sports. Visitation 4-7 p.m. Wednesday (Feb. 24) at Dodo Mortuary Chapel. Wake service at 7 p.m. Visitation again 8:30-10:30 a.m. Thursday (Feb. 25) at St. Joseph Catholic Church.
