Press club offers scholarships
The Big Island Press Club announces the availability of scholarships for students pursuing higher education in journalism and related careers.
Last year, BIPC awarded a total of $4,600 to six Hawaii Island students at its annual scholarship dinner.
Application deadline is April 8. To qualify, applicants must have Big Island residential ties, demonstrate an interest in journalism or related career, be enrolled as a full-time student and show a record of academic achievement.
BIPC annually offers the $1,500 Robert C. Miller Memorial Scholarship, $1,000 Bill Arballo Scholarship, $1,000 Marcia Reynolds Scholarship, $600 Yukino Fukubori Memorial Scholarship and the $500 Jack Markey Memorial Scholarship.
This year, the Hugh Clark scholarship, honoring the late Hawaii Island journalist, also will be awarded.
Winners will be announced May 12 during the BIPC scholarship dinner.

Permaculture, grant-writing classes on tap
The University of Hawaii at Hilo’s North Hawaii Education and Research Center is offering a permaculture workshop in February and a grant-writing workshop in March.
Instructor Zach Mermel will teach the basics of permaculture from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. Saturday and Sunday (Feb. 20-21) at the center, 45-539 Plumeria St. in Honokaa. Tuition is $95.
The basic grant-writing workshop, led by Jeani Navarro, will take place from 9 a.m.-4 p.m. March 12 at Waikoloa Elementary School, 68-1730 Hooko St. in Waikoloa Village. Tuition is $75.

The Office of Continuing Education and Training at Hawaii Community College is offering a series of classes to help managers, team leaders and excelling business people improve their professional skills.
The series examines practical skills needed to develop confidence in supervisory abilities and increase workplace productivity.
The first class is Email Management from 5:30-8 p.m. March 10 at HCC-Manono, Building 379, Room 1. Tuition is $65. Employment and Training Fund assistance is available.
