Randy Hart, a 26-year Rotary member, recently was named the incoming 2016-17 Rotary Club of Hilo president.
Hart first joined Rotary in 1990 when he was assigned to Kilauea Military Camp as the commander and is now the camp’s director/general manager.
“I’ve retired after 38 years in uniform and I now have time to devote more energy toward Rotary, both locally here and internationally,” Hart said.
Rotary’s motto is “Service Above Self” and a testament to Hart’s past military service.
“It’s amazing what can happen in our community, in our country and in the world when like-minded people come together to move a project forward,” he said. “In my upcoming year of presidency, I plan to work with and enhance our new theme, ‘Rotary Serving Humanity’ as we plan for the future.”
The Hilo community probably is most familiar with the Rotary’s signature fundraising event, Hilo Brewfest. This year’s Brewfest will take place June 18 at the Wainaku Executive Center.
In addition to the club’s foundation, proceeds from Brewfest will benefit the Hilo Medical Foundation Residency Program and the Friends of the Children’s Justice Center of East Hawaii, a nonprofit that supports children of abuse.
To join or visit the club, which meets at noon Fridays at the Hilo Hawaiian Hotel, can contact one of its many members or visit hilorotary.org and drop the club a note clicking on the Contact Us tab.
