8 trespassing arrests at Hawaiian self-governance meeting
KAILUA, Oahu (AP) — Honolulu police have arrested eight people for trespassing at a golf club where Native Hawaiians are gathered to discuss self-governance.
Police spokeswoman Michelle Yu says six men and two women were arrested at noon Monday.
This is the final week of the four-week convention at the Royal Hawaiian Golf Club in Kailua. Participants aim to draft a governing document, which could eventually go before the Native Hawaiian community for ratification.
Some Native Hawaiians have been protesting the effort for various reasons, including opposing federal recognition.
Kahookahi Kanuha says he and others were arrested after they entered the golf club gates.
Organizers originally planned to have 40 elected convention delegates. They later invited all candidates to participate after facing a legal challenge to the election.
Hawaii officials weigh options for failing Waikiki groin
HONOLULU (AP) — Officials are holding a public meeting about a project that aims to repair or replace a crucial groin in Waikiki.
They say the Royal Hawaiian groin between the Waikiki Sheraton and the Royal Hawaiian hotels is in an extremely deteriorated condition. If it fails, officials say more than 1,700 feet of sandy shoreline located east of the groin in the heart of Waikiki could be destabilized.
They’re considering replacing the groin, repairing it or building a new concrete wall.
The Department of Land and Natural Resources and Waikiki Beach Special Improvement District will hold the meeting Tuesday night. It will be held in the Waikiki Community Center.
High surf forces Hawaii beach park, road closures
HALEIWA, Oahu (AP) — High surf is prompting the closure of several Oahu beach parks and the partial closure of a major North Shore road.
Honolulu officials said Monday waves forced the closure of Kamehameha Highway in both directions from Haleiwa to Turtle Bay.
Only emergency vehicles, public buses and local traffic will be allowed on that section of the road.
The city closed Haleiwa Alii Beach Park after high surf slammed into one of the parking lots. The park was partially flooded.
The state Department of Land and Natural Resources says it closed Yokohama Bay due to high surf.
On Kauai, ocean safety officials are advising people not to swim at any north shore beaches from Polihale to Anini Beach.
