During the week of Feb. 15-21, Hawaii Island police arrested 25 motorists for driving under the influence of an intoxicant.
Eight of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes.
The numbers of arrests by district were:
• Puna, nine.
• Kona, eight.
• South Hilo, four.
• South Kohala, two.
• Ka‘u and Hamakua, one each.
So far this year, there have been 155 DUI arrests compared to 133 during the same period last year, an increase of 16.5 percent.
There have been 183 major accidents so far this year compared to 199 during the same period last year, a decrease of 8 percent.
So far this year, there have been two fatal crashes, resulting in two official fatalities compared with two fatal crashes resulting in four fatalities during the same period last year. That represents a decrease of 50 percent for fatalities.
DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide, police said.
