HONOLULU — Secean Johnson hit 13-of-14 free throws, including six in the final 75 seconds, and scored 19 points as UC Riverside upset Hawaii 77-71 on Thursday night.
Jaylen Bland led the Highlanders (14-15, 5-8 Big West) with 20 points, hitting five 3-pointers, and DJ Sylvester had 18. Johnson had 10 rebounds as Riverside snapped a four-game losing streak.
Aaron Valdes had 20 for Hawaii (23-4, 11-2), which lost a six-game winning streak. Roderick Bobbitt 17 and Stefan Jankovic 12 with 10 boards.
Riverside led 36-32 at halftime and was up by 10 with 9:18 to play.
Hawaii caught up with just more than five minutes to go and had a one-point lead on a jumper by Bobbitt with 2:33 remaining but four straight free throws put Riverside back on top 72-69 with 1:15 remaining.
Riverside was 17 of 19 from the line in the second half.
Wahine win
Destiny King scored 11 points and became the 2oth Rainbow Wahine to score more than 1,000 career points, and UH won its seventh game in a row, 70-50 on the road against Cal State Fullerton.
Ashleigh Karaitiana led four scorers in double figures with 17 for UH (17-9, 10-3).
