BGCBI offers spring program

Are you seeking a fun, safe, educational and nurturing experience for your child while school is on spring break?

Boys &Girls Club of the Big Island provides caring, trained, adult mentors and fun, life-enhancing programs at clubs in Hilo, Keaau, Pahoa, Hamakua and Pahala. The BGCBI spring intersession program is from 7:30 a.m.-5:30 p.m. Monday-Friday, March 16-24. The registration deadline is March 14.

Rotary welcomes Doubletree GM

The Rotary Club of South Hilo inducted its newest member, Phyllis Branco, general manager of The Doubletree by Hilton Naniloa Hotel.

The Rotary Club of South Hilo is an organization made up of local business, professional, and civic leaders who meet regularly to form great friendships and do good works. The club meets at noon every Tuesday at the Hilo Hawaiian Hotel.

Hilo Betsuin celebration set

Honpa Hongwanji Hilo Betsuin invites the public to its Spring O-Higan celebration and seminar March 18-20 at Sangha Hall.

Featured speaker will be the Rev. Ron Kobata of the Buddhist Church of San Francisco.

O-Higan is celebrated twice, in the spring and autumn, when the day and night are the same length — called equinoxes. O-Higan is a time when people are reminded to find balance in their lives, and to find and pursue harmonious relations with everyone, being that we are all interconnected.

Fishing vessel course in Hilo

The Alaska Marine Safety Education Association will offer a free 12-hour Fishing Vessel Drill Conductor workshop from 8 a.m.-8 p.m. Saturday, March 5, at the University of Hawaii at Hilo Student Life Center, 200 W. Kawili St.

Instructor Laura Schneider will cover EPIRBs, flares and maydays; man-overboard recovery and firefighting; immersion suits and PFDs; helicopter rescue; life rafts; abandon-ship procedures; cold-water survival skills; and emergency drills.

AMSEA drill conductor workshops meet the training requirements for drill conductors on documented commercial fishing vessels operating 3 or more miles offshore.
