West Virginia’s Ray Guerrini hit two solo home runs and the Mountaineers scored in every inning but the fifth and sixth Sunday for a 9-2 victory and a split of the four-game series in Honolulu.

The Rainbow Warriors (6-7) were trying to move their record above .500 for the first time this season, but they were outhit 13-6 and starter Josh Pigg (0-2) was pulled after three innings.

Guerrini also doubled and scored for West Virginia (7-3), and Darius Hill collected a two-run double among his three hits.

Alan Baldwin had an RBI single and scored a run for UH, which opens a four-game series Thursday against Michigan at home.

Vulcans out to end skid

The UH-Hilo baseball team will try to end a five-game losing streak when it continues its series with Azusa Pacific at 6 p.m. Monday at Wong Stadium.

The Cougars swept a doubleheader in close fashion Saturday, winning 3-2 and 6-4 in eight innings.

In the nightcap, the Vulcans (2-6, 1-5 Pacific West Conference) rallied to tie the game in the bottom of the seventh on a two-out single by Yoshinori Tanaka that scored pinch-runner Marcus Calamese.

Azusa Pacific (6-9, 2-0) got the lead back in the eighth. Zach Taylor singled with one out, stole second and scored on Justin Gomez’s single to right field.

David Moody (1-2), UH-Hilo’s third pitcher, took the loss.
