Students named to fall dean’s list

Bree Kaneakua and Jennifer Taniguchi were named to the fall dean’s list at Creighton University in Omaha, Neb., for the 2015-16 academic year.

Full-time students who earn a 3.5 grade-point average or better on a 4.0 scale are eligible for the dean’s list.

Creighton University enrolls 4,000 undergraduates and 4,000 graduate and professional students among nine schools and colleges.

Certification programs offered

The Hawaii Island Landscape Association and University of Hawaii Cooperative Extension Service are offering the 2016 Landscape Maintenance Training Program and the Landscape Industry Certification Testing Program to landscape professionals and home gardeners.

Training encompasses a 10-week series of classes that also can be taken individually. Topics include: basic botany, tropical plant identification and selection, plant nutrition and soil health, turf care, irrigation basics, pruning trees and shrubs, establishing and managing a landscape, pesticide use and safety, pest ID and control, and landscape plan reading and calculations.

Classes will be 2-5 p.m. Thursdays from April 7-June 9 at the Hawaii Community College–Palamanui campus.

Cost for each class is $35 for HILA members or $40 for non-members. The fee for the entire series is $325 for members and $375 for non-members. Space is limited and early registration is suggested.

Tuition assistance offered through the Department of Labor’s Employment Training Fund is available for both programs. Qualified applicants pay half-price.

Food safety certification class slated in Kona

TOBE Co. Food Safety is hosting a rare ServSafe Certification Class in Kona.

This one-day class is slated for 8 a.m. April 12 at the Courtyard King Kamehameha’s Kona Beach Hotel. Most students will be finished with the exam by about 5 p.m. Attendees must pre-register.

“The Health Department will be implementing mandatory Food Safety certification for restaurants within the next year,” Tom Frigge, president of TOBE Co., said. “Getting certified now is the best way to make sure managers and employees get ahead of the curve.”

Since TOBE Co. is an approved trainer in the Employment and Training Fund program, tuition assistance might be available through this state-operated program. To find out if you qualify and how much your tuition would be, call Frigge at 808-235-0797.

“We haven’t had a class on the Big Island for several years so we expect this one to sell out,” Frigge said. “If you haven’t already reserved your seat call soon to register so you don’t get closed out.”

To register, call Frigge or email him at TFrigge@TOBECoFoodSafety.com.
