Ginger Towle, president of the West Hawaii Humane Society, recently was honored with a Lifetime Animal Advocate Award by the Humane Society of the United States.

Inga Gibson of the HSUS presented the award to Towle at the annual Humane Society Day at the state Legislature on Feb. 12.

The day was organized by Gibson to give animal welfare advocates an opportunity to network, review upcoming animal welfare legislation and meet with individual legislators.

Towle has been involved in animal welfare in Hawaii since 1978. Under Towle’s leadership, the West Hawaii Humane Society held the animal control contract in West Hawaii from 1980-90. She has worked every job at the shelter, including animal control, and has a complete understanding of the problems and responsibilities that humane societies face.

WHHS is committed to cooperating with other animal welfare organizations and provides financial grants to nonprofit humane organizations that offer low or no cost spay-neuter programs and/or sanctuaries, volunteer organizations in particular.

The West Hawaii Humane Society also is dedicated to supporting enforcement of all statutes and ordinances for the protection of animals — domestic and wild.
