The Hilo Orchid Society recently honored its 2016 Yasuji Takasaki Memorial Scholarship recipients Rochelle Nowaki and Miguel Bravo.
Nowaki and Bravo are seniors at the University of Hawaii at Hilo.
Nowaki is looking toward a career in the agriculture industry in East Hawaii and wants to write a history of the industry on Hawaii Island, in particular the development of orchids and ornamental plants.
Bravo plans to pursue a Ph.D. in plant pathology and to expand the connections between Hawaii and Colombia, his native country, for the benefit of both places.
The scholarship pays $1,500 per term to deserving UH-Hilo students and is named after Yasuji Takasaki, one of the founders of Hawaii’s orchid-growing industry.
The Hilo Orchid Society is accepting scholarship applications for the fall 2016-spring 2017 terms. For more information, visit www.hiloorchidsociety.org/scholarships.
