Haili volleyball tourney starts Monday

The 59th annual Haili Tournament starts at noon Monday and finishes on Saturday with the championship games. Here’s the schedule:

• Monday through Wednesday games will all be in the Junior Division with Girls 16 and 18 and Boys 14 played at Hilo Civic’s two courts. The UH-Hilo gym will have Girls 12 and 14 on two courts. Hilo Armory will have Girls 14 on one court. Kawananakoa Center’s games will start at 1:40 p.m. in Coed 8 and 10s on two courts.

Junior games will continue in Girls 16s and 18s at the Civic at noon Tuesday and the other courts at the same time.

• Wednesday will feature games only at the Civic as championships in the Junior Division start from 4 p.m. and continue until about 8 p.m.

There are 56 junior teams competing this year, including 45 from Hawaii, four from Oahu, five from Maui, one from Molokai and one from Guam in the Girls 18s.

The 70 adult teams will begin play at 9 a.m. on Thursday at the Civic and 9:50 a.m. at all other courts and continue until about 10 p.m. Women Masters will begin the day with Women AA playing from 2:50 p.m. on Court 1 and Men A starting the day and Men AA playing on Court 2 from2:50 p.m.

UHH gym will have Men A and Men B. Hilo Armory games will be Women B and Kawananakoa will have Women A on 1 court. All games will be pool games to qualify for single-elimination playoffs late on Friday afternoon.

Pool games will continue on Friday at all sites from 9:50 a.m. except Court 2 at the Civic which will start at 9 a.m. Single-elimination games will start for most divisions in the early evening.

Championships in Women Master 45s and 30s, Women B, Women A and Women AA will be played on Court 1 at the Civic from 9 a.m. and Men B, Men Masters, Men A and Men AA will play on Court 2 from 10:15 a.m. All games should be completed by about 3 p.m.

Forty-four adult teams are from the Big Island, 19 from Oahu, two from Maui, two from Molokai, two from Guam and one Men AA team will come from Samoa.

Kaneohe VBC will be returning this year, and Tai Manu-Olevao from UH-Manoa will be playing on a WAA team called A Mother’s Prayer.

There will food concessions at each site and T-shirt sales at the Civic.

33rd annual Business Canoe Regatta

Deadline for entering Kamehameha Canoe Club’s Business Canoe Regatta is Monday, March 28. This annual fun event will take place on Sunday, April 10 at the Hilo Bayfront starting at 8 a.m.

Divisions are:

• Business Men, Women, Mixed — those with no paddling experience:

• Intermediate Men, Women, Mixed — no more than two paddlers with minimum experience

• Open Men, Women, Mixed

• Open Teen Mixed- 18 years and under

• Open Senior Mixed Masters — 50+ years

St. Louis, Wong land radio home in Hilo

For the first time, fans of Kolten Wong and the St. Louis Cardinals will have a regular home on the radio dial for games all season long.

The St. Louis Cardinals and Pacific Media Group’s KHLO-AM 850 and KKON-AM 790 (branded as The Big Island’s ESPN Radio) have partnered to present Cardinals baseball games all season long, beginning on Saturday, March 19 with a Spring Training game against the Boston Red Sox.

ESPN Radio will present nearly 150 Spring Training and regular season games, featuring the Cardinals and Wong, a Hilo native who is a regular at second base for St. Louis.

Additionally, ESPN Radio will air a “Redbirds Recap” every morning, keeping fans up to date with the latest results and info on upcoming games.
