The community is invited to a free screening of the documentary film “Patsy Mink: Ahead of the Majority” and a panel discussion about the late U.S. congresswoman from 4:30-6:30 p.m. Wednesday at the University of Hawaii at Hilo, UCB 127.
In 1965, Patsy Takemoto Mink became the first Asian-American and woman of color in Congress. Seven years later, she ran for the U.S. presidency and co-authored Title IX, the landmark legislation that opened up higher education and athletics to America’s women.
“Patsy Mink: Ahead of the Majority” is the story of this dynamic trailblazer who, battling racism and sexism, redefined American politics.
Following the film will be a panel discussion about the issues Mink raised.
The film screening is being presented in conjunction with Women’s History Month. The event is sponsored by the American Association of University Women Hilo Branch, UH-Hilo Office of Equal Opportunity &Title IX and the UH-Hilo Women’s Center.
Panelists will include Jennifer Stotter, UH-Hilo Title IX coordinator, and UH-Hilo professor Emerita Nina Buchanan.
