Hilo Criminal Investigation Section detectives were informed by the medical examiner that an autopsy determined that the gunshot wound sustained by the juvenile male on Friday in Mountain View was self-inflicted.
The boy was taken off life support and died Saturday.
Foul play has been excluded in this incident, which is classified as a fatal home accident.
Detectives are conferring with the prosecutors on possible criminal charges stemming from the storage of the firearm.
