During the week of March 28-April 3, Hawaii Island police arrested 14 motorists for driving under the influence of an intoxicant. Six of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes. One of the drivers was younger than 21.
The numbers of arrests by district were:
• Kona and South Hilo, six each.
• Puna, two.
So far this year, there have been 289 DUI arrests compared to 241 during the same period last year, an increase of 19.9 percent.
There have been 362 major accidents so far this year compared to 378 during the same period last year, a decrease of 4.2 percent.
So far this year, there have been five fatal crashes on Hawaii Island (one with multiple deaths), resulting in six fatalities, compared with four fatal crashes (one with multiple deaths), resulting in six fatalities, during the same period last year.
DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide, police said.
