Whitman sophomore Casey Poe, a 2014 Kamehameha graduate, was selected to the USA-D3 women’s basketball team will venture on a Brazil Tour over the summer. The men’s and women’s teams are comprised of invited NCAA Division III players, who have been recognized at the national, regional and conference levels.
The tour runs from July 19-28 and the teams will play selected under 22 and professional teams from the Sao Paulo region. The D3 women will also play a pro team from the Paulista League.
While in Rio, the team will be staying on the famous Copacabana Beach and touring the Christ the Redeemer Statue and Sugar Loaf Mountain, two of the most recognizable landmarks in the world.
The USA D-3 Basketball Teams will also visit sites and venues that will be hosting the 2016 Summer Olympics in Rio de Janeiro. The Opening Ceremonies for the Rio Games is Aug. 5.
Poe is the only player from Hawaii on either team. The women’s coach will be Puget Sound’s Loree Payne.
The 5-foot-10 guard averaged 11.8 points per game was named to the All-Northwest Conference second team. The Missionaries (17-8) lost to Puget Sound 84-79 in overtime in the first round of the NWC tournament.
78 Vuls recognized for all-around excellence
On National Student-Athlete Day, the University of Hawaii at Hilo recognizes 78 Vulcan student-athletes for their academic, athletic and community service excellence.
Created by the National Consortium for Academics and Sports in 1987, student-athletes must earn a 3.0 grade point average or higher while engaging in community service.

Free UHH softball clinic in Waimea
Waimea Athletics will host a free youth clinic featuring the UHH softball team on Sunday, April 24 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Waimea Park.
Players ages 8-14 will participate in advanced hitting, pitching-catching, batting and fielding stations. Players islandwide are welcome to attend.

Hawaii junior golf scholarships deadline
The deadline for submitting Hawaii State Junior Golf Association College Scholarship applications is Friday, April 29.
Last year, the HSJGA awarded $10,000 to deserving recipients pursuing a college education. The available scholarships are: C.Pardee & Betsy Erdman HSJGA College Scholarship, HSJGA College Scholarship, and Thos Rohr HSJGA College Scholarship.
The Thos Rohr is new this year and available only to Big Island residents.
