Apply for charter preschool grants
Four Hawaii Island public charter schools are accepting applications for preschool development grants for the 2016-17 school year.
Laupahoehoe Community Public Charter School, Ka ‘Umeke Ka‘eo in Hilo, Ke Kula ‘o Nawahiokalani‘opu‘u Iki in Keaau and Na Wai Ola in Volcano receive federal grant monies to offer free preschool to qualified families.
Family income and age requirements must meet federal guidelines. Eligibility requirements include children who are 4 years old whose birth dates are on or between Aug. 1, 2011, and July 31, 2012, and whose family income is at or below 200 percent of the federal poverty guidelines for Hawaii.

UH-Hilo to host lifesaving training
The University of Hawaii at Hilo invites the public to a compression only cardiopulmonary resuscitation and automatic external defibrillation training session from 5-6:30 p.m. Tuesday in Vulcan Gym.
Capt. Chris Honda of the Hawaii Fire Department’s Emergency Medical Services Bureau will demonstrate the three essential steps to saving a life during sudden cardiac arrest. Participants will then have the opportunity to practice what they learned.
The session is sponsored by UH-Hilo, the Hawaii Fire Department and the Hilo Medical Center Foundation.

CCECS offers guitar workshop
The College of Continuing Education and Community Service at the University of Hawaii at Hilo offers “Learn to Play Guitar in a Day!” from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. April 30 at Kanaka‘ole Hall, Room 127.
The cost is $100 and includes a book and clip-on electric tuner. Participants must provide their own acoustic guitar.
The workshop is designed for busy adults who want to learn to play guitar but don’t have time for weekly lessons. Participants will learn basic chords, simple strumming and picking patterns, basic music theory, tuning techniques, guitar care, music resources, performances skills and more.
Marlene Hutchinson, creator of “Learn to Play Guitar in a Day!” presents her one-day workshop at colleges, universities and other locations throughout the United States. Her DVD airs on PBS and she has been featured on CBS, NBC, National Public Radio, in Acoustic Guitar magazine, the Women’s International Music Network.
