Four Hawaii Island students will represent the state at the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair from May 8-13 in Phoenix.

Four Hawaii Island students will represent the state at the Intel International Science and Engineering Fair from May 8-13 in Phoenix.

The students are Keanu Pinner and Moana Lily Pinner of Hilo High School; Felix Peng of Waiakea High; and Sarah Mumbert of Kealakehe High.

Keanu’s project is titled “Modulation of THP-1 Macrophage Cytokine Expression by Kava Metabolites.”

Moana Lily’s project is “Investigating the SPF, Antioxidant and Anti-cancer Potential of Turmeric (Curcuma long) and Ginger (Zingeber officianale) Combinations on Melanoma Cancer Cells.”

Keanu and Moana Lily’s teacher, Nyra Dee, will travel with them as chaperon.

Felix’s project is “Isolation of a novel marine microorganism capable of aromatic hydrocarbon degradation in East Hawaii.”

Sarah’s project is titled “Image Processing and EDS Analysis Using ImageJ.”
