During the week of April 18-24, Hawaii Island police arrested 18 motorists for driving under the influence of an intoxicant. Six of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes. Three of the drivers were under the age of 21.
The numbers of arrests by district were: Kona, 9; Puna, 5; South Hilo, 3; and South Kohala, 1.
So far this year, there have been 341 DUI arrests compared to 299 during the same period last year, an increase of 14 percent.
There have been 457 major accidents so far this year compared to 477 during the same period last year, a decrease of 4.2 percent.
As of Monday, there were 10 official traffic fatalities compared to seven during the same period last year, a 42.9 percent increase.
DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide, police said.
