The Hilo Orchid Society presented its Orchid Isle Award for 2015 to Hawaii Tropical Botanical Garden in Papaikou.

The Hilo Orchid Society presented its Orchid Isle Award for 2015 to Hawaii Tropical Botanical Garden in Papaikou.

The annual award is given to the person or organization that has done the most to promote Hawaii Island as the Orchid Isle. David Tan, executive director of Hawaii Tropical Botanical Garden, accepted the award from Hilo Orchid Society President Rick Kelley.

Fittingly, the presentation took place in the botanical garden’s Orchid Garden, where blooming orchids are always on display for visitors. In addition, hundreds of orchids have been mounted on the trees lining the pathways throughout the botanical garden so visitors can see orchids growing and blooming on trees as they do in the wild. The orchid collection is cared for by orchid specialist Ryan Atiz.

In addition to its orchids, Hawaii Tropical Botanical Garden is famous for its waterfalls and collections of rare palms, heliconias, gingers and other tropical plants. For more information, visit www.htbg.com.
