For nearly 50 years, noted kama‘aina archaeologist Patrick Kirch explored the Pacific, his research taking him to more than two dozen islands spanning the ocean from Mussau to Hawaii to Easter Island.
In Hawaii, Kirch traced the Islands’ history in the Anahulu Valley on Oahu and across the ancient district of Kahikinui on Maui. His recently published memoir, “Unearthing the Polynesian Past,” is rich with stories of his many expeditions throughout the islands and peoples of the Pacific, in a jargon-free narrative that conveys the adventure of these experiences as well as the setbacks and discomforts.
Kirch will share some of these tales and reveal how knowledge of the Polynesian past greatly expanded through the decades during a presentation from 7-8:30 p.m. Monday at Lyman Museum. Copies of his book will be available for sale.
Admission to this program is free to museum members, $3 for nonmembers. Space is limited; first come, first seated.
