The Hawaii Japanese Center will present a talk-story and book-signing by Myra Sachiko Ikeda, author of “A Harvest of Hawai‘i Plantation Pidgin: The Japanese Way,” from 2-4 p.m. May 7.

In her book, the Hilo-born Ikeda examines how Japanese immigrants and their descendants used a unique brand of Pidgin English to communicate with others on Hawaii’s sugar plantations.

Ikeda will share her personal experiences in documenting not just the language, but the lifestyle of the era as well.

Hardcover copies of the book will be available for sale for $20, including tax. Admission to the event is free.
