Waiakea’s Ty Nishimura put down at least 15 kills Tuesday night in Honolulu, but it wasn’t enough to save the Warriors from a 25-19, 19-25, 26-24, 25-22 loss to Kahuku in the first round of the HHSAA Division I state volleyball tournament.
The third set was a classic back-and-forth battle in which Nishimura compiled eight kills. The Warriors’ Kolby Aiona had a kill to tie the set 11-11, and then the teams trades points until – 13 ties later – a Red Raiders service error made it 24-24.
Kakuku (13-2), the OIA’s No. 4 team, took the last two points at Moanalua High and went on send BIIF runner-up Waiakea (11-4) to the consolation round. The Warriors will face McKinley at 3:30 p.m. at Moanalua.
Because of a computer error, statistics weren’t kept in the second set. Waiakea hit just .067 in Games 1, 3 and 4. Claysen Morante had at least 11 kills, while and Aiona was credited with eight.
At Kalani High, Kamehameha-Kapalama beat Waipahu 25-20, 22-25, 25-18, 25-22, advancing to a quarterfinal match at against BIIF champion Kamehameha (14-0) at 7 p.m. Wednesday.
Corpuz upsets teammate for state title
Punahou senior Mariel Galdiano was trying to make more history at the HHSAA state golf championship Tuesday at Wailua Muni on Kauai.
But her teammate, fellow Buffanblu senior Allisen Corpuz, won her first state title with a birdie on the fourth playoff hole.
Both finished regulation with a 2-under 142 total. Corpuz shot 70-72 while Galdiano opened with a 72 and closed with a 70.
Corpuz signed with USC last November while Galdiano signed with rival UCLA at the same time.
Galdiano is the only golfer (male or female) to capture three state medalist titles.
The highest BIIF golfer was Waiakea sophomore Kaley Saludares (83-8—164), who tied for 17th.
Saludares, the two-time BIIF champion, finished just short of receiving a state medal. The top 15 earn a medal.
Other BIIF golfers were Waiakea’s Jillian Mitsuda, 86-83—169; Waiakea’s Kaelyn Uchida, 87-87—174; Kamehameha’s Chloe Waters, 86-91—177; Waiakea’s Anne Nakamoto, 88-90—178; Waiakea’s Tori Hironaga, 96-96—192; Waiakea’s Tia Kualii, 97-101—198; Hilo’s Sunny Sakai, 96-102—198; Hilo’s Juby Aipoalani, 102-97—199; and Keaau’s Anela Dalton, 103-101—204.
Punahou won it’s fourth consecutive team title with a 440 total and was followed by Iolani, 470; Mid-Pacific, 473; Maui, 473; Kaiser, 473; Waiakea, 507; Kalani, 508; Mililani, 519; and Kauai, 547.
