Inmate sues after schizophrenic cellmate beats him up
HONOLULU (AP) — A former defense contractor imprisoned for giving military secrets to his Chinese girlfriend is suing the federal government after a paranoid schizophrenic cellmate beat him up.
The lawsuit argues Honolulu Federal Detention Center officials should have known Benjamin Bishop’s cellmate was suicidal, had been on psychiatric medication and had just tried to rape a woman on an airplane.
The lawsuit filed Thursday says Michael Tanouye shouldn’t have been put in a cell with anybody.
Bishop’s left eye was swollen shut after the beating. The 62-year-old suffered multiple bruises and cuts.
Bishop is serving a seven-year sentence after pleading guilty in 2014 to giving his graduate student girlfriend classified information and keeping classified documents at home.
The U.S. Attorney’s office in Honolulu didn’t immediately respond to an email seeking comment.
Hawaii lab explosion investigation results delayed to June
HONOLULU (AP) — The University of Hawaii is announcing another delay for the results of an independent investigation into what caused a laboratory explosion that seriously injured a visiting researcher.
The university said Friday the investigation will be finished by the end of next month. The school had initially planned for it to be completed by the end of April but later pushed the plan back to mid-May.
The school says the investigation won’t be finished until unspecified materials are tested for investigators from the University of California Center for Laboratory Safety.
The explosion in April caused a visiting researcher to lose an arm. She told fire department investigators the blast occurred after she turned off a digital pressure gauge she was using to check the pressure in a gas cylinder.
Hawaii unemployment rate inches higher to 3.2 percent
HONOLULU (AP) — Hawaii’s unemployment rate inched higher to a seasonally adjusted 3.2 percent in April.
The state Department of Labor and Industrial Relations said Friday the jobless rate rose from 3.1 percent the previous month.
Nationally, the unemployment rate was 5 percent in April, unchanged from March.
The department says the hospitality and education sectors added jobs while the professional and business services sector cut positions.
