Cousins from Troop 54 earn rank of Eagle Scout

Joyden Ka‘eleleponoakeakua Madriaga and Kaleonahenahe K.T.M.M. Miyasaki, members of Boy Scout Troop 54 in Hilo, recently attained the rank of Eagle Scout.

Joyden Ka‘eleleponoakeakua Madriaga and Kaleonahenahe K.T.M.M. Miyasaki, members of Boy Scout Troop 54 in Hilo, recently attained the rank of Eagle Scout.

Madriaga, a senior at Kamehameha Schools-Hawaii, is planning to serve a two-year church mission for the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints after graduation. Upon completion of his mission, Madriaga will further his education at Southern Virginia University.

His Eagle project was the construction of two cement slabs to provide a solid, level and safe foundation for benches at Panaewa Zoo. This project involved the coordination of a volunteer effort which included friends, family and fellow Scouts to prep, measure and lay out the pour area for the two slabs.

Madriaga is the son of Gene and Joy Madriaga of Hilo.

Miyasaki is a senior at Hilo High School and plans to attend Hawaii Community College and study diesel auto mechanics.

His Eagle project was assisting Hawaii County Civil Defense by assembling 50 cribbing bags for community emergency response teams.

The project involved coordinating a volunteer effort that included friends, family and fellow Scouts to cut, sort, size and bag blocks of wood CERT members will use to support structural foundations damaged during a natural disaster.

Miyasaki is the son of Ernest Miyasaki and Ashlee Mahi-Miyasaki of Hilo.

Troop 54 is sponsored by the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, Kilauea Ward.
