Hilo man faces multiple weapons, drug charges

KAILUA-KONA — Tips from motorists about a reckless driver led to multiple drug and weapons charges against a convicted felon, police report.

At 8:20 p.m. Wednesday, officers responded to reports of a reckless driver operating a red two-door sedan on the Daniel K. Inouye Highway at the 16-mile marker, headed in the Kona direction.

Officers found the vehicle at 9:30 p.m. near the highway’s intersection with Highway 190, where they determined the driver and sole occupant, Cory Young, 39, of Hilo was wanted in a narcotics investigation by the Area I Vice Section. After arresting him, police said they found two packets containing 0.2 grams of methamphetamine and $4,425 in cash on his person. Young’s vehicle was towed and he was taken to the Kona police cellbock while Area II Vice Section detectives continued the investigation.

On Thursday, detectives executed a search warrant on the vehicle. They reportedly found a loaded 9 mm semi-automatic pistol, 29 unspent rounds of ammunition, 189.4 grams of methamphetamine packaged for distribution, 0.6 grams of cocaine, 18 hydrocodone pills, four morphine pills, 202.2 grams of marijuana packaged for distribution and paraphernalia associated with the use and distribution of methamphetamine and marijuana.

Young was charged Friday afternoon with first-degree methamphetamine trafficking, four counts of third-degree promotion of dangerous drugs, first-degree promotion of detrimental drugs, second-degree promotion of detrimental drugs, two counts of possessing drug paraphernalia, eight firearm offenses, reckless driving, driving without a license and driving without insurance.

In connection with the previous narcotics investigation by Area I Vice, Young also was arrested and charged with one count of first-degree promotion of detrimental drugs and three counts each of third-degree promotion of dangerous drugs possession of drug paraphernalia.

His bail was set at $297,000. He remains at the Kona cellblock pending his initial court appearance Tuesday.
