Suspect in fatal assault arrested following chase
HONOLULU (AP) — Honolulu police say they arrested a suspect in connection with a fatal assault after a chase that ended on a freeway overpass.
Rimoni Pologa-Seiuli was arrested Monday in connection with the investigation of a second-degree murder and because of an outstanding warrant.
Officers responded to reports of an assault in a store parking lot and discovered the suspect fled the scene.
“The initial argument and altercation occurred down the street at another convenience store and the suspect gave chase to the victim, and they ended up here in the parking lot,” said Lt. Phillip Lavarias with the Honolulu Police Department.
The 48-year-old victim of the alleged assault, who has not yet been identified, had head injuries, according to Emergency Medical Services.
Police said they followed the suspect to the H-1 Freeway overpass.
Carl Ahlo said he began recording the incident after noticing several officers talking to a man standing on the outer side of the overpass railing.
“I was just hoping that he wouldn’t jump. I figured they were talking to him, but they had so many of them there that he was like back and forth, so they had to keep their distance to make sure that he didn’t jump,” Ahlo said.
After talking with the suspect for what Ahlo said was at least a half an hour, officers wrestled him to the ground and took him into custody.
All westbound lanes of the freeway were closed for nearly hour during the incident.
Police are not sure whether Pologa-Seiuli and the victim knew each other. They said no weapon has been found.
