Feds: Plane was 150 feet high before crash
HANAPEPE, Kauai (AP) — Witnesses who saw a Kauai skydiving tour plane crash told investigators it was 150 feet in the air when it made a sudden right turn, descended and hit the ground.
All five people on the single-engine Cessna died in last month’s fiery crash, which happened soon after takeoff.
The National Transportation Safety Board said in a preliminary report Wednesday that no flight plan was filed.
The wreckage was taken to a secured facility for further examination.
Scientists: Reserve now coral graveyard
WASHINGTON (AP) — Scientists found most of the coral is dead in what was one of the world’s most lush and isolated tropical marine reserves.
Researchers finishing an emergency undersea expedition Wednesday described what they called a graveyard of coral around Jarvis Island in the Pacific Remote Island Marine National Monument.
In November, much of the coral bleached white but was alive. Scientists say now it is 95 percent dead.
National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Mark Eakin said the culprit is El Nino assisted by man-made warming.
‘Floatilla’ leaves beach trashed
HONOLULU (AP) — An impromptu, word-of-mouth celebration at a Honolulu beach left some locals unhappy on Memorial Day morning.
Hundreds of beachgoers participated in the “Floatilla” event in Waikiki, but they left a mess for others to pick up the next morning.
Pohai McWhirter and some friends spent nearly two hours picking up all the trash Monday morning. They found nearly 200 flotation devices scattered on the beach, as well as alcohol bottles, coolers and shoes left behind.
Organizers of Sunday’s event said in a statement they weren’t as prepared for the beach crowds as they expected to be.
Sanders picks up superdelegate vote
HONOLULU (AP) — U.S. Sen. Bernie Sanders picked up a superdelegate vote in Hawaii.
The state Democratic Party elected Sanders supporter Tim Vandeveer to serve as party chairman. Vandeveer said Tuesday he plans to vote for Sanders at the Democratic National Convention in July.
It takes 2,383 delegates to win the nomination. Hillary Clinton has 2,312 delegate votes so far, according to an Associated Press count. Sanders has 1,545 delegates.
Despite the numbers, Vandeveer thinks Sanders has a chance.
“Between pledged and superdelegates, you never know,” Vandeveer said.
