During the week of May 30-June 5, Big Island police arrested 23 motorists for driving under the influence. One was involved in a traffic crash. Two were younger than 21.
The numbers of arrests by district were: Kona, 14; South Hilo, six; South Kohala, two; and Puna, one.
So far this year, there have been 484 DUI arrests compared to 440 during the same period last year, an increase of 10 percent.
There have been 630 major accidents so far in 2016 compared to 661 during the same period last year, a decrease of 4.7 percent.
So far this year, there have been nine official fatal crashes on the island, one of which had multiple deaths, resulting in 10 official fatalities, compared to eight official fatal crashes, two of which had multiple deaths, resulting in 11 official fatalities during the same period last year. This represents an increase of 12.5 percent for fatal crashes and a decrease of 9.1 percent for fatalities.
DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide, police said.
