KAILUA-KONA — A brush fire that broke out near Waikii Ranch was almost under control Wednesday afternoon as it burned within Pohakuloa Training Area.
The fire started Monday and firefighters were able to direct it away from the subdivision.
As of Wednesday, the fire was about 80 percent contained, and firefighters were preparing to cut the final part of a firebreak, said PTA Fire Chief Eric Moller.
So far, the fire has burned about 400 acres, he said, with no structures damaged or people injured or in danger.
Moller said no live-fire training has taken place in the area that he is aware of, so there is no special concern about unexploded ordnance.
Firefighters with PTA, the Hawaii Fire Department and Parker Ranch have assisted with bringing the fire under control.
