Maui LGBT community honors victims
WAILUKU, Maui (AP) — Members and supporters of Maui’s LGBT community gathered Monday on a Kihei beach to honor the victims of the Orlando nightclub shooting.
Nearly 200 people attended the vigil on the shore in front of the Maui Sunseeker LGBT Resort.
Speakers encouraged the crowd to not give in to fear and help educate others about actions or language that could hurt the LGBT community.
Friends and strangers linked arms and headed to the water’s edge to toss flower petals into the ocean. Jaysen Giroux, a 14-year-old transgender youth, shared a poem written for the Orlando victims.
Kauai police blamed for low turnout at event
LIHUE, Kauai (AP) — Organizers of a benefit concert to raise money for cancer treatment say police intimidated attendees by setting up a roadblock barricading the event and checking each car that passed through, ultimately affecting their ability to raise money.
Attendance at Saturday’s Reggae for Life concert in Koloa was hundreds fewer than expected with less than 50 people.
Last year’s concert brought out about 250 people.
Concert organizer Phillip “Angel” White says this year’s event resulted in a $9,000 loss. He says he doesn’t understand why police were outside the event, which offered prize drawings, a rodeo and food vendors.
County spokeswoman Sarah Blane said the Kauai Police Department set up a DUI checkpoint, but that it wasn’t intended specifically for the concert.
No arrests were made.

HONOLULU (AP) — Honolulu police Officer Jessie Laconsay, who is charged with sexually assaulting a 14-year-old girl, made his initial court appearance in district court Tuesday, according to the Honolulu prosecutor’s office.
Police found Laconsay on Oahu’s North Shore after asking the public to help find him last week.
A criminal complaint filed in court says he allegedly had sex with the girl last week. He’s charged with two counts of first-degree sexual assault and one count of third-degree sexual assault.
After his arrest June 8, police say he was taken to a hospital for non-life threatening injuries.
He’s being detained on $500,000 bail. It’s not clear whether he has legal representation.
