Families recently gathered at Kilauea Military Camp to attend Hospice of Hilo’s annual Family Bereavement Camp.
With art therapy and sharing sessions, children and adults participated in a range of activities to process and find healing in their grief.
During the camp, participants also hiked from KMC to the Jagger Museum, attended a yoga class led by Lisa Tennant, ate meals, played games and developed learning skills to make it through an often difficult time for families, said Fujio Sato, Hospice of Hilo children’s bereavement counselor.
“Hospice of Hilo staff and all the counselors have greatly helped each one of my family members,” said one participant. “When we didn’t know what to do or where to turn to, Hospice of Hilo showed up in our lives and helped us in so many ways that we can’t even begin to describe.”
Hawaii Island United Way, Friends of Hawaii Charities, Rotary Club of South Hilo, the Hawaii Lodging and Tourism Association and the Combined Federal Campaign and others contributed to the event’s success.
“It is really a special time for families to come and work together to find each other and glimmers of light, hope and joy,” Sato said.
