Police are asking the public’s help to identify the suspect in a theft Monday at a Hilo store.

Police are asking the public’s help to identify the suspect in a theft Monday at a Hilo store.

According to police, the man entered the store on the 300 block of East Makaala Street at about 9:05 a.m. and was observed to select and place numerous items in a backpack. He then put on a pair of shoes and left the store wearing them, police said.

When store employees confronted the man outside the store, he dropped the backpack and fled on foot toward Railroad Avenue, police said, still wearing the shoes.

Police said the shoes and the items in the backpack are worth $398.

The suspect, whose image was captured on a surveillance camera, is described as in his mid-20s, about 5-foot-8 and 150 pounds with dark hair.

Police ask anyone who recognizes the suspect is asked to call the police non-emergency line at 935-3311 or Crime Stoppers at 961-8300.
