KAILUA-KONA — Firefighters quashed a brush fire Thursday afternoon south of Lokahi Apartments in Kailua-Kona.

The fire that broke out shortly before 2 p.m. was located in vacant land inaccessible to firefighters, said Hawaii Fire Department Battalion Chief Ty Medeiros. It burned about 1 acre and came no closer than 1/2 to 3/4 of an acre south of the apartment complex off Kaiminani Drive.

A Hawaii County helicopter was used to perform water drops at the site. Medeiros said winds were blowing at just 5 mph, helping keep the fire from spreading.

No evacuations or road closures were ordered and no structures were threatened.

Also Thursday, Pohakuloa Training Area and Hawaii County volunteer firefighters doused a flare-up that broke out Wednesday within the previous burn area near Waikii Ranch, said PTA Fire Chief Eric Moller. He said the flare-up occurred about 200 to 300 yards within an established fire perimeter and posed no threat of escape. Crews continued to monitor the fire that has smoldered since last month.
