During the week of July 4-10, Hawaii Island police arrested 19 motorists for driving under the influence. Four of the drivers were involved in traffic crashes. None of the drivers were younger than 21.
The numbers of arrests by district were: Kona, 12; South Hilo, three; Puna and South Kohala, two each.
So far this year, there have been 570 DUI arrests compared to 523 during the same period last year, an increase of 9 percent.
There have been 766 major accidents so far this year compared to 798 during the same period last year, a decrease of 4 percent.
So far this year, there have been 11 official fatal crashes, one with multiple deaths, resulting in 12 official fatalities, compared to 10 fatal crashes, two with multiple deaths, resulting in 13 official fatalities, during the same period last year. This represents a decrease of 7.7 percent for fatalities.
DUI roadblocks and patrols will continue islandwide.
