“Moonwalker,” a sculpture in painted bronze mesh at Papio Ocean Park in Pahoa, is the creation of award-winning artist Karen Mortensen, a longtime resident of Hawaiian Shores.
Part of the inspiration for this piece came from the global movement to provide public art known as “Sculpture by the Sea.” Mortensen, who produced this sculpture for the community as a parting gift for the people she has grown to love, is a painter and sculptor who has lived in Hawaii for the past 17 years.
Working in this medium, a method pioneered by Mortensen and refined during her time in Hawaii, “Moonwalker” is the culmination of her long journey with this process. The sculpture, an ethereal rendition of a mythical being, is described by Mortensen in the following words: “Wrapped in clouds, Moonwalker steps lightly across the heavens.”
“Moonwalker” will be celebrated with a reception from 3-5 p.m. Sunday at Papio Ocean Park along the ocean in Hawaiian Shores. There will be a blessing by Aunty Emily Naeole, entertainment and refreshments. All ages welcome.
The event is hosted in part by the nonprofit Hawaiian Shores Community Association. For more information, call Stephanie Carney at 965-8140 or email HSCA_AA@hawaii.rr.com.
