A disabled Hawaiian Airlines jet landed without incident at Hilo International Airport at about 9:30 a.m.
Details are sketchy, but initial reports were that there was smoke was in the cockpit.
A Department of Transportation spokesman said the airliner appears to be a Boeing 767 jet diverted to Hilo from its original destination for an emergency landing, and firefighters and ambulances were standing by.
